I am hesitant to ask on just any site or an yahoo because it is a very sensitive question regarding my sweet elderly dog.

It's just for house pets like dogs/cats/rabbits/etc It should help you out.. it has a live chat feature where you can talk one on one with vets who will specialize in your particular pet/breed/problem/etc.
If you have a serious issue to discuss, you would be better off actually taking your dog to a vet clinic. Even a veterinarian who is motivated to help you can't tell anything without examining your pet and running some diagnostics.
If it's something more sensitive than serious, you could post it here and maybe get some general advice. I've seen at least a few vets post here from time to time. Unfortunately, I've seen others that claim to be vets and obviously are not. You are correct to be cautious.
