Here's an awesome site with a heap of animal related careers you could get into, as well as the salary you'd expect and a bit about the training involved. Hope it helps! :)
You should practice that career as soon as you can, volunteer at a shelter, cat/dog sit while a friend is on vacation, or work at a pet shop. All those jobs will help you understand exactly what to expect later on and help you understand the animals very well. You could be a vet, a zoologist, a breeder, and a trainer. All these jobs sound fun huh? I wanna be a vet, though they all sound good.
You can do anything in the world of animals. From grooming and training, to medicine, research and lab work. Also conservation and rescue. You can work at zoos, animal hospitals, conservation centers, animal control, help with land surveys and even work for the government. If you are really passionate about working with animals you need to start working with them as soon as possible. Volunteer at animal shelters, start dog walking, foster kittens or rabbits, even pet sit, do everything you can think of to work with animals. I worked in a barn in exchange for riding lessons and learning how to train horses. Mainly, figure out exactly what kind of animal you want to work with. If you prefer wild animals to domestic ones, conservation or zoology might be better for you. If you like horses consider going into equine science or equitation. Yet again if you find you love man's best friends best (all the domestics) you can go into vet assisting, vet technology (one step away from the vet) or go all the way for veterinary medicine. The possibilities are endless.
I for one want to work with large exotic animals and I am currently studying for my BA in Zoology and then I want to study to be a DVM with a specialty in surgery.
You have to understand that a lot of animal careers do not pay that well. In fact most vets get payed between $32,000-$97,000 a year depending on their location and speciality. Veterinary Assistants are usually paid minimum wage, maybe a little bit more with Vet Tech starting out at around $11-12 /hr depending on location. If you worked for a chain store as a bather you'd make minimum wage with groomers making a few dollars more. Make sure that this is what you really want to do because it will try all of your patience and then more and it will exhaust you past the point of exhaustion, but it is totally worth it.
