Hi
I'm in desperate need of somewhere to take my 14 year old cross bred dog. We really can't keep him any more becuase he's too much of a risk around our 3 year old who's scred of him. Also he is barking and whining a lot more too. I'm trying everything to not have him put down but have hit a brick wall as far as Jerry Green's and Humberside animal Rescue are concerned cos of his age. The Ark are full so don't have space. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Please?

It's very hard to find adoption homes for older dogs. Our humane society will a take dog of any age a long as its health is good and has a reasonable prospect of living at least one year in an adoptive home. That said, if we took him, it would be extremely difficult to find a an adopter who would take a 14 year old dog and I suspect the dog would spend his remaining days in the shelter.
Is the risk to your 3-year old from Grimsby - who is aggressive or because your 3-year old is afraid? If Grimsby is aggressive, he really is unadoptable at this point - no shelter will take him if he doesn't pass temperament tests and he is awfully old for retraining and you should not take the risk with a child in the house. In these cases euthanasia may be the only option. If the problem is that your 3-year old is afraid, but Grimsby is a gentle dog, I think you should work with child and dog, keep them separated when you can't supervise and let Grimsby spend his remaining time with you.
phone the RSPCA and they will come and collect him, explain the situation. never buy a dog again.
if you go to the blue cross just off freeman street someone there will give you good advice and good luck
How can you be so cruel and get rid of the dog you have had all of your life.
Im sorry but how can your child be scared of the dog after all this time??
Not many (if any) shelters will take your dog at this ripe old age, as no one will be willing to take on a dog of this age, and no vet will put down a perfectly healthy dog!!
Keep your dog and help your child learn not to be scared of the dog!!
THe RSPCA will take him.
However be aware that they probably will be less than sympathetic and criticise your choice.
Given the age of the dog and the fact that he cannot be kept around children, he is not a candidate for rehoming. I am sure he will be put to sleep at the earliest opportunity, especially during summer months when people dump their pets to go on holiday (they are full). This is going to happen after being left behind by his owner (you), scared in a kennel.
I recommend that you take your responsibilities:
- make arrangements to protect the kid and keep your dog
(ideal scenario)
- get him put to sleep yourself: arrange for this to be done at home, in the dog's usual envirronment, with you around him
If you dont want him put to sleep, keep him otherwise make sure that at least his last moments are confortable and not going through hell.
Sorry but this is the cruel reality you are faced with. Don't hide from it.
