A bunny! I love my bunny, he is full grown at about 4-5 pounds. He doesn't bite, but he chews on his wood chew sticks that I give him. He acts like a dog, he follows me around the house and trys to be a watch, hehe, when someone comes to the house he runs behind my legs. He loves to be out and about. LOVES to sit and watch tv or surf the internet with you. I got my bunny for free, but you can get them as cheap as 10 or 20 dollars. He's pretty comical when I let him run around in our fenced in backyard. He jumps and kicks and runs so fast he's like one of those cartoon character that their feet barely touch the ground as they run. I clean his cage once a week and he doesn't smell at all. Have fun choosing!
A parakeet!
I have a parakeet. It's small, not furry, but soft. It has never bit me. You can teach it to perch on your finger and shoulder. They love human company. They only cost around 20 dollars. They sing along to songs and are very fun to watch. And they do not smell bad.
How about a virtual pet? You don't sound ready to own a pet.
Ferrets are hilarious pets. They need a LOT of supervision because as soon as your back is turned they can have your drink knocked over and be rolling your cup across the floor through the water. Ferrets really need to eat a HIGH quality ferret food, like Marshall's or if it is a last resort, they will be fine on Iams Kitten chow, it is in a purple bag. They need a cage of at least 2' l, 2' w and 3' h. They like to sleep in a hammock, which I made from an old towel that I wired to the upper area of my ferrets cage. They can also appreciate a sleep sack rather than hammock in the winter or whenever it gets cooler outside, I use old bogans for this. Your ferret may not ever be litter trained, like mine (although funnily, he uses the cat's litter box when he's allowed out) They need at least 3 hours of out of cage time, no matter how big the cage or how many toys. My ferret is allowed out from the time I get up (arround 10) to about 9:30, 11 and a half hours out of cage. Ferrets, especially young ones like to bite, as that is how baby ferrets play with one another. A way to curb this is to spray Grannick's bitter apple, or Bitter Cherry, on your hands and feet when you play, eventually, the taste will teach the ferret that you are not good to bite. NEVER hit a ferret for any reason, you may hurt their sesitive backs and at the very least you are teaching the ferret to be afraid of you. And the ferret may bite in self defense, spray or no spray. If you would like any more info, you can email me and I can give you the whole list.
Having a pet costs - price of the pet is the lowest cost. You have to have proper cage or terrarium for it, right kind of food so it won't get sick eating it (different animals require different kind of food) and even veterinary costs.
Also, all animals will bite if they are scared or think you may hurt them, so you should learn to treat them well right from the beginning!
Small rodents don't eat as much as bigger species though, and live shorter (hamsters and mice having lifespan of approximately 1 - 2 years, gerbils 4 - 6 years), so feeding and healthcare doesn't cost in the long run as much as with bigger animals (like rabbits) who eat more and may live up to 10 years or more.
Hamsters and cavies are known to be easy to handle and are often taken as first pets for children. Bunnies have way more temper than cavies and also are bigger, so they're not as easy to handle, but there's a lot you can do with a bunny other than just watch. Bunnies need a lot of space and excerise.
Birds are not easy pets, they need experienced caretakers and they also live long.
I suggest you'd read a lot of info on different pets, how much space and what kind of food they need. Ask also owners and breeders how is life with such animals. It may help you to decide and also figure out what does it crave from you to become a pet-owner!
Rats are small and furry
